SRINAGAR, JULY 21: Top Army commanders of Northern Command are meeting shortly to discuss what can be done to ensure that Kargil-like situations do not recur, a senior Army officer said today.``We shall be doing an after-action review to come to grips with all the problems that caused it (the Kargil intrusion),'' Lt Gen H M Khanna, GOC-in-C, Northern Command, told reporters here.
He said from every such episode there were lessons to be learnt. ``I think Army has also learnt a few lessons, most important among them being never to let our guards down and keep surveillance at the forefront.''
In response to a query, he said the directors general of military operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan met this afternoon, and added there was a permanent communication link between the two and they continued to meet.
Gen Khanna also said that the intrusion was launched to give a new lease of life to the dying militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
``Our strong and effective response has made the enemy retract butPakistan will definitely attempt to rejuvenate militancy," he told reporters here.
Referring to the recent massacre of innocent civilians, including women and children, he said Pakistan had once again started going after soft targets, killing unarmed civilians in their houses and villages.
``I still hope that militants would learn their lessons from the Kargil episode and know that the burden that they have imposed on the state, fear of loss of life and loss of livelihood and loss of development will get them nowhere," Lt Gen Khanna said.
