Spectre of submergence still persists, claims NBA

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, July 21: Even though the levels of backwaters of the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) decreased on Wednesday, the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) has claimed that there was still the danger of submergence of satyagrha villages of Domkhedi in Maharashtra and Jalsindhi in Madhya Pradesh.

Sanjay Sangvai of the NBA said in a press release that the dedicated band of those on satyagrha is all set to confront submergence. Meanwhile, the number of people reaching Domkhedi is increasing.

While the water level was 90.35 meter at the dam site on Tuesday, it has receded slightly. Yet there is still threat of waters entering villages, Sangvai claimed.

He said that the satyagrahis have made it clear that the government would be responsible for all the damages to the land, houses and lives of people.

Further, the NBA release claimed that Maharashtra Minister for Resettlement Jaiprakash Mundada conceded that the State would ask for extension in order to present the factual position regarding the resettlement before the Supreme Court. The hearing is on Thursday. He was speaking to students from Mumbai who took out an impressive march on Tuesday against what they termed as unjust submergence in the Narmada valley.

Sangvai claimed that the students had demanded that the Maharashtra Government should direct the Gujarat Government to open the sluices of the dam to lessen the submergence.

They also demanded that the Maharashtra must owe the responsibility of submergence this year and pay compensation to the families which lose crops and houses due to submergence.
