AHMEDABAD, July 21: Though wild rumours did the rounds throughout the day, the city remained by and large peaceful except for a stabbing near Panchkuva Gate and stone-throwing at some places.Dariapur, Kalupur, Manek Chowk, Khadia and Astodia remained tense though the situation was under control. However, in the afternoon a stabbing was reported from Panchkuva area behind English cinema. The injured, a man who was going to meet his fiancee in Kalupur, was admitted to V S Hospital.
Stone-throwing was also reported from Bhanderi pol and Panchkuva area in the afternoon. Later in the evening, a minor incident was reported from Chhabila Hanuman on Gandhi Road. A group of youths in Khadia beat up youths belonging to another community who were passing through the area. About three incidents were reported from Khadia.
Police allowed relaxation in curfew between 4 pm and 6 pm for women and children in curfew-bound areas. City Police commissioner P C Pandey said the situation was under control and the police would decide whether to relax the curfew for men and women on Thursday after reviewing the situation at night.
Late on Tuesday in Jalampuri ni chali in Saraspur, about five houses, a godown and six autorickshaws were set on fire by a rampaging mob, police said. The mob went on the rampage after a youth was beaten up in Dariapur. The police lobbed about 50 teargas shells to control the situation.
In all, seven offences relating to stabbing and arson were registered in four police station areas of Dariapur, Kalupur, Madhupura and Shaherkotda, Police said and about 30 persons have been arrested in connection with violence in these areas. Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya and the Police commissioner held a meeting with local leaders of both the communities from Kalupur and Dariyapur area. While leaders of one community demanded action against those involved in the killing, the other community demanded relaxation in curfew for two hours.
