Pune corporators worried as gastro claims 1

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, July 23: The general body meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) witnessed pandemonium as the elected representatives came down heavily on the civic administration for its apathy towards `gastroenteritis epidemic' in the city.

According to them, it was evident from the death of a teenager on Thursday morning.

Anupama Dhamale (14) of Gokhale Nagar had died while undergoing treatment for gastroenteritis at a private hospital on Senapati Bapat Road on Thursday.

Visibly irked Shyam Satpute, a corporator, raked up the issue immediately after the general body meeting. While stating that he had warned the civic administration about the epidemic during the general body meeting on Wednesday, he demanded to know what action had been taken.

He was joined by several other corporators who demanded that the administration brief them on the measures adopted to curb the epidemic. They also insisted that water storage tanks at all schools in the area should be inspected immediately.

AdditionalMunicipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor said Anupama was suffering from gastroenteritis for the last two days. She was admitted to a local private clinic on Thursday morning. Later she was shifted to the hospital on Senapati Bapat Road where she died on the same day, he added.

While denying that an epidemic has broken out, Kapoor said Anupama's death was an isolated case and that it should not be seen as the beginning of an epidemic of gastroenteritis. Occurrence of a few cases of gastroenteritis is normal during the monsoon, he said.

Kapoor clarified that the civic administration had started spraying pesticides to curb flies in Gokhale Nagar and Wadarwadi areas to prevent an epidemic.

Immediately after the general body meeting was over, he directed the civic staff to inspect the water storage tanks at all the schools in the area.
