Hoteliers cave-into PMC onslaught

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, JULY 23: Sustained action by Pune Municipal Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad against the hotels violating the development control rules has forced the hoteliers to submit an undertaking saying ``they would not use margin space for commercial purpose again'' to regain the health licenses.

The civic administration today reissued the health licenses to Hotel Revival on Fergusson College Road as well as Hotel Shiv Sagar and Hotel Atithi on Jangli Maharaj Road after their owners submitted the undertakings. The administration took a firm stand on the issue stating that the licence could be issued only if they assure that the margin space would not be used for commercial purposes.

Subsequently, the hoteliers promised in their undertakings that henceforth they would not violate the provisions of the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning (MRTP) Act and the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation (BPMC) Act.

They also promised that the open spaces and marginal spaces on the premises would not be used again for commercial purposes. The hoteliers stated that they would withdraw the cases filed by them in the court against the Pune Municipal Corporation, Gaikwad told the mediapersons.

The decision to reissue the health licenses to hotels after obtaining undertakings from the owners was taken after a delegation of hoteliers met Gaikwad on Thursday.

Gaikwad had told the delegation members that the hoteliers were free to move the court against the civic administration's action of revoking their health licenses but he would not tolerate the use of open spaces and marginal spaces for commercial purposes.

He had also stated that the civic administration may reissue the health licenses if the hoteliers if they submitted undertakings saying that they would not use marginal spaces for commercial purposes again.

Gaikwad told the reporters that revoking health licenses for hotels repeatedly indulging in violating the development control rules and disconnecting their water supply was meant to curb use of marginal spaces and open spaces for commercial purposes.

The action has evoked satisfactory response as some of the hoteliers have submitted the undertakings, he said. The civic administration would now restore the water supply to these hotels as their health licenses had been reissued, he added.

The civic administration had revoked the health licenses and disconnect water supply to the hotels as they had been found misusing the margin space, meant for parking of vehicles, for commercial purposes.
