Schemes for martyrs' kin set in motion

AHMEDABAD: The National Defence Fund has finalised and set rolling the first lot of schemes for families of soldiers who lost their lives fighting in Kargil. These include 500 gas agencies and petrol pumps for war widows; a non-returnable grant of Rs 5 lakh for house construction, for which free site will be provided; and a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 for the dependent parents of a dead soldier who have no other source of income, Major General Ugrasen Yadava, Director-General of Resettlement, told The Indian Express on Friday. A separate amount has been set aside for children who have lost their fathers. An amount of Rs 1 lakh per child, with a maximum limit of Rs 2 lakh for a family, is being put in fixed deposits for their education. The interest will be used for the education of the child and the deposit will be handed over to him or her on achieving maturity.
