The direct selling industry grew by 62.25 per cent during the last financial year over 1997-98. According to the Indian Direct Selling Association's (IDSA) latest newsletter Direct the turnover of the direct selling industry was Rs 312 crore, as against Rs 520 crore in 1998-99. IDSA is a body of direct sellers that includes companies like Amway, Avon, Dorling Kindersley, LB Publishers, Lotus Learning, Oriflame and Tupperware.Direct selling offers self-employment and additional income to around 5 lakh persons. The number of sales persons involved in direct selling grew 300 per cent during the last financial year over 1997-98. From employing 1,25,000 persons in 1997-98, the industry today employs over 5,00,000 sales persons.
