Major infiltration bid by Pak foiled

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
SRINAGAR, AUG 1: Army troops scuttled a major infiltration bid by Pakistan to send armed militants into Jammu and Kashmir where 12 people, including six Pakistani intruders, a foreign mercenary and an Army jawan, were killed and 13 others wounded since last evening.Four militants were arrested as security forces smashed some militant hideouts to recover arms and ammunition including two missiles, while a militant laid down arms in the state during the period, an official spokesman said today.

He said a patrol party of 2/9 Gorkha rifles yesterday noticed movement of a group of Pakistani intruders in Nowgam sector of Kupwara district in North Kashmir yesterday.

The heavily-armed militants, who had entered Indian territory from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) taking advantage of poor visibility and thick fog through Shamaswari range, were challenged. They immediately took positions in the rocky area and opened fire on the troops around 1500 hours yesterday, the spokesman said.

The militants weresurrounded by the Ghatak Platoon (Commando Platoon) of the Gorkha Rifles and engaged in effective fire-fight, the sources said adding all the six Pakistani intruders were killed in the shootout which lasted for nearly three hours.
