Ultras' bid to foil I-Day fete foiled, arms seized

SRINAGAR, AUG 1: With the timely recovery of ten powerful improvised explosive devices (IED) from a militant hideout here on Friday, the Border Security Force (BSF) has been successful in thwarting militants' plan to disrupt the forthcoming Independence Day functions in the state capital, a senior BSF official said here today.

``The aim of the militants was to plant these IED's at various places in Srinagar to create panic in public and also to cause harm to security forces,'' BSF Deputy Inspector General B N Kabu said.

Kabu told reporters that the devices were seized from a militant hideout at Anchar lake near Soura following information by BSF intelligence.

Acting on the information, a BSF party raided the militant hideout last night and recovered the ten prepared IED's Alongwith other accessories, the BSF official said.

Terming the seizure as a ``major achievement'', the DIG said besides foiling militants attempt to disrupt Independence Day functions, it had saved a number of human livesalso.

However, he said no one had yet been arrested in connection.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Governor G C Saxena has said security situation in the state had improved during the last three years and there were visible signs of growing normalcy.

Addressing a group of Indian Police Service (IPS) probationers here on Friday, Saxena expressed satisfaction over the recent success achieved by the security forces and the state police against the militants.

However, he emphasised the need for continued vigilance and further intensification of the security effort. The Governor also stressed that the members of security forces and the police should act within law and must respect and uphold the human rights of common citizens in all circumstances.
