A statement issued on Sunday stated that various activities like medical camps, vocations guidance and career management courses of students and religious discourses were held all over the city as part of the celebrations which commenced 40 days prior to the Syedna's birthday on August 2.

The celebrations were organised under the guidance of the Pune head of the Dawoodi Bohra community Janab Abdeali Bhaisaheb Nooruddin and the Jamat and included a fund drive for Kargil martyrs, a table tennis tournament and slide show.

City survey officer falls in ACB net
A city survey officer, Satish Yadavrao Bhosale, was caught red-handed accepting a bribe by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday afternoon.

According to the ACB, Yeshwant Shankarao Nimhan had filed a complaint with them following harassment by the survey officer.

In February, Nimhan approached Bhosale to get the plans for a plot of land in Pashan approved. Bhosale allegedly refused stating that the land was under public use and therefore he could not give him a copy of the relevant documents. Later, Bhosale allegedly asked Nimhan to pay Rs 10,000. Following this, Nimhan approached the ACB who set up a trap and advised him to take the money to Bhosale. On Saturday Nimhan went to Bhosale's office with the money. The moment Bhosale accepted the money the waiting ACB officials placed him under arrest.

A case has been filed against the accused with the Khadak police station. Deputy superintendent of police S S Deshpande is investigating.

Elephant died of septicemia
The post-mortem of the elephant Sharda, performed by the officials from the Disease Investigation Society at Aundh, has revealed that the animal died due to ``septicemia resulting into circulation failure.''

Speaking to the reporters, PMC garden superintendent Yashwant Khaire said septicemia might have been the fallout of an infection. Khaire refused to comment on the nature of the infection or the circumstances which aggravated the elephant's illness. ``Further tests are still being carried out to determine the exact type of the infection,'' he said. The female elephant had died on June 23, after being shifted from Peshwe Park to the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo at Katraj. Khaire said the zoo authorities started treating the female elephant with saline and antibiotics after it stopped having food on June 22.
