SAD announces candidates, may not support Gujral

BAJINDER PAL SINGH
CHANDIGARH, AUG 1: With Sukhbir Singh Badal being renominated from Faridkot along with Tarlochan Singh Tur from Tarn Taran and Chitan Singh Samaon from Bathinda, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has stuck to nominating sitting candidates in the forthcoming elections to the Lok Sabha. Party president Parkash Singh Badal also announced the candidature of Prabhjot Kaur, wife of former Rajasthan governor Darbara Singh, from Jalandhar.

The only replacements in the list announced by the SAD are Surjit Singh Rakhra from Patiala, who has replaced Prem Singh Chandumajra and Prabhjot Kaur from Jalandhar. With this, the chances of Akali Dal support to former Prime Minister and sitting candidate from Jalandhar, Inder Kumar Gujral appear to have receded, although Gujral is yet to make a formal announcement announcing his decision so far.

The announcement of Tur from Tarn Taran ends a round of speculation that Badal's daughter would be the candidate from Tarn Taran.

SAD has now declared the entire list of candidates andhas become the first party in the State to do so. The party has an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, who are yet to announce their candidates for Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur.

However, it is learnt that the BJP has decided to recommend renomination of the three sitting candidates to the party high command. A meeting is slated to be held at Delhi tomorrow to consider the final list of candidates.Apart from the alliance with the BJP, SAD has already announced that they would support Satnam Singh Kainth of the Bahujan Samaj Morcha from Phillaur. The only replacements in the SAD list are Surjit Singh Rakhra from Patiala who has replaced Prem Singh Chandumajra and Prabhjot Kaur from Jalandhar. The party has already announced the candidature of Zora Singh Mann from Ferozepur, Amrik Singh Aliwal from Ludhiana, Surjit Singh Barnala from Sangrur, and Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal from Ropar.

Meanwhile, the Congress high command is still considering the probable candidates and is yet to announce its list. The All India Shiromani Akali Dal, led by former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Gurcharan Singh Tohra has, however, announced a few candidates including outgoing member of Parliament Prem Singh Chandumajra from Patiala, Balbir Kaur Khalsa, wife of former MP Basant Singh Khalsa from Ropar and Gurdarshan Singh Grewal, former Punjab advocate general, from Ludhiana.
