Carbajal beats Arce on points

TIJUANA, MEXICO: Michael Carbajal, trailing on all three judges' cards, stopped Jorge Arce in the 11th round to claim the junior flyweight championship of the fringe World Boxing Organization.

Carbajal (49-4) landed a left that sent Arce back into the ropes, then hit Arce with three strong rights to send him into the ropes a second time. The fight was called at 1:53 of the round.

Arce, of Mexico, led 98-91 on all three of the judges' cards.

Sales pitch

LONDON: David Sales cracked the highest first-class score of the English cricket season on Saturday when he finished on 303 not out for Northamptonshire against Essex in the County Championship.

Sales, 218 overnight, hit 46 fours and two sixes in a seven-hour innings at Wantage Road as the home side were bowled out for 579 in their first innings.Sales, 21, is the youngest Englishman to score a treble century in first-class cricket.

Sir Alex peeved

LONDON: Manchester United manager Sir AlexFerguson says his club have been ``hung out to dry'' by the British government and the English Football Association (FA) over their withdrawal from this season's FA Cup.

United pulled out of next season's competition to play in January's World Club Championship in Brazil, sparking a furious debate over where the Old Trafford club's loyalties lie.

United chairman Martin Edwards dismissed criticism from new Sports Minister Kate Hoey, branding her comments ``disgraceful'' and ``ignorant''.

Anelka unsure

LONDON: Striker Nicolas Anelka claims he has no idea where he will be playing this season despite Arsenal and Real Madrid announcing they were negotiating a multi-million dollar transfer deal with him, The Mail newspaper reported.

Tracked down by the newspaper's reporter to an elegant Parisian suburb, Anelka said fiercely: ``I don't know what I'm going to do or where I'm going.''

No decision yet

GERMANY: Michael Schumacher said he did not know when he would be able to return to racingfollowing his high speed crash at last month's British Grand Prix.

``It's a difficult question,'' the double world champion, nursing a broken leg, said in a short television interview when asked when he planned to come back. ``At the moment, I am not able to predict when things will be right.''

Whatmore set

COLOMBO: New Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore will start re-building Sri Lanka's battered cricketing pride when he takes control of national team training this week.

Whatmore will formally take over the Sri Lankan squad from Sunday at an annual fee of 50,000 pounds sterling, cricket officials said.

Kiwis win

LONDON: New Zealand warmed up for the third Test against England beginning on Thursday at Old Trafford with a nine-wicket victory over county champions Leicestershire.

The tourists were set 199 to win after Leicestershire made 333 in their second innings at Grace Road.

But captain Stephen Fleming (82 not out) and Craig McMillan (85 not out) shared a 170-run second-wicket standto cruise to victory at 202 for one.
