Haren confirms involvement

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
GANDHINAGAR, Aug 2: Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya on Monday confirmed the involvement of VHP and Bajrang Dal activists in at least two incidents of violence in Ahmedabad, including burning of Bhagyodaya restaurant, but said that they were ``involved as individuals and did not represent their organisations''.

Addressing a news conference here on Monday, Pandya said that out of the total 60 FIRs registered by the police during the 10-day-long disturbances, the names of VHP and Bajrang Dal activists figured in only two FIRs. ``Hence, it is not proper to say that these two organisations are involved,'' he contended.

Pandya said local Bajrang Dal leader Harshad Gilitwala and his accomplice Bhaskar Bhatt were arrested in connection with the burning of Bhagyodaya restaurant near Gurukul crossroads in Ahmedabad on Saturday night, while a VHP activist was named in the FIR filed by Gomtipur police station in connection with violence in that area last week.

The minister said the police was looking for other persons involved in the Bhagyodaya incident. ``A team of the Crime Branch, led by DCP A K Surolia, is investigating the circumstances that led to the arson and the law will take its own course,'' he said.

When his attention was drawn to the incident in which former BJP MLA Bhupendra Khatri had reportedly asked a youth to file a police complaint in a ``fake stabbing'' case, Pandya said the Crime Branch was investigating this too. He turned down the Congress demand for a judicial inquiry, saying the IB was already inquiring into the disturbances.

The minister asserted that the government would not spare anyone found involved in the violence. ``Some people close to us think that just because we are in power, they can do anything and get away with it. We also do not believe in appeasing the minorities if they break the law and misbehave,'' Pandya said.

The minister did not rule out the possibility of the disturbances being engineered with a political motive to defame the ruling BJP in the State. ``The names of workers of certain political parties also figure in FIRs,'' he said. However, he declined to divulge the names of these political parties and their workers.

66 arrested for rioting
Ahmedabad:
With no untoward incident being reported from any part of the walled city on Monday, the situation in Shahpur and Karanj police station areas limped back to normal. Police have decided to relax curfew for all from 6 am to 10 pm on Tuesday too. Meanwhile, the Gomtipur police arrested 66 people in connection with the four rioting cases in the city. Three others were arrested by the Gomtipur police with weapons.

According to reports, one person was stabbed on the banks of Sabarmati river at Raikhad na chapra in Haveli police station area on Sunday. However, police believe an old dispute to be the reason behind the stabbing. Police have arrested one person in this connection, while the other two are absconding.
