SURAT, Aug 2: An unidentified middle-aged man on Monday afternoon tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl from a corporation-run school, but fled leaving the child behind after she raised an alarm, the police said. Incidentally, the incident took place at the same school from where two students were kidnapped, raped and murdered in October 1998.According to a complaint registered in the Katargam police station by Vibhuti Bhaskar Desai, a teacher of municipal school no 185 at Phulpada, the accused, aged between 30 and 35, tried to lift Smita Vinodbhai -- aged 10 and a class III student -- from the road opposite the school, with intentions to kidnap her.
But even as he lifted the child and tried to run away, the girl raised an alarm after which a crowd gathered. The accused then put down Smita, a resident of Brahmin Falia, Phulpada and escaped from the scene before he could be nabbed. No arrest has been made in the case, which is being investigated by PSI A I Gadhvi.
Earlier, two girls studying in the same school were kidnapped brutally raped and murdered.
