Demilitarised zone in Kargil yet to materialise

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SRINAGAR, AUG 6: With both the armies locked in an eyeball to eyeball confrontation in certain sectors of the LoC in Kargil, the proposed confidence-building measure (CBM) of a one-km demilitarised zone has made little headway.

Addressing mediapersons at the HQs 15 Corps here on Thursday, Brig (General Staff) A K Chopra said at certain points the Indian Army was sitting right on the LoC while at other points the Pakistan Army was perched right up-front on the LoC. ``At certain points both the Armies are facing each other on the LoC,'' he said.

Proposed as a one-km zone on both sides of the LoC which have been kept free of military presence of both the Armies, the CBM discussed by both the DGMOs has not taken off on the ground.

Queried about the alarming reports of about 1,000 hardcore infiltrators having sneaked into the state, Brig Chopra admitted that the infiltration this year was higher than that seen last year. When asked to explain the contradiction of a stepped vigil and heavy infiltration, BrigChopra said, ``The LoC is porous even though we have maintained the maximum vigil.''

Meanwhile, six of the 18 youths forcibly abducted for arms training across the LoC by militants were reunited with their family after they surrendered before the Army.

``They escaped from the militants after a two-day walk where they were not even given food and water. They were only given a pair of shoes. They escaped from the jungles where they were taken to in Kupwara district and surrendered before the Army checkpost at Drangiwari in the Chowkibal area,'' said Brig Chopra.
