Ultras kidnap 4 RSS men

AGARTALA: Four senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders including Shyamal Kanti Sengupta, zonal secretary to the eastern zone of the Sangh, were on Friday abducted by the militants of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) near 82 miles area of Dhalai district. Police said, two armed militants entered a school, run by the RSS, near 82 Milies area under Manu police station and abducted the leaders at gun-point. They were without security and were inspecting the school when the incident occurred. The other abducted leaders were Dinen Deyh, Subhamay Dutt and Subhankar Chakrabarty.

IISC to have most powerful computer

BANGALORE: The most powerful supercomputer ever made in the country Param 10000 would be installed at the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) here, under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) on Friday. Param 10000 will be installed at IISC's SupercomputingEducation and Research Centre (SERC) initially with access facility later to the National Param Supercomputing Facility (NPSF) at C-DAC in Pune.

Five booked for deer hunting

DINDIGUL: Five persons were arrested while they were trying to hunt a deer at Chathrapatti reserve forest, a forest official said on Friday. The five were nabbed on Tuesday when they were chasing a deer with sharp-edged weapons in the Chathrapatti reserve forest area, District Forest Official A Venkatesh told reporters here. The accused were detained by the officials after a long chase, he said.

Life term for rape, murder of minor

HISAR: A local court sentenced a 19-year-old youth to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 12,000 on the charge of raping and murdering his own r sister. According to the prosecution, Vikram killed his 12-year-old sister by hanging her after raping her on July 27, 1997. Om Prakash, the father of the accused had lodged the FIR in this regard and he and his wife Raj Bala hadgiven evidence against their son. Om Prakash said in the FIR that on the day, he told his daughter to bring lunch at their farm. When she did not turn up, he went home to find Vikram hanging her from a ceiling fan.

Floods claim 205 lives in Bihar

PATNA: The overall flood situation in Bihar remained unchanged with major rivers like Ganga, Kosi, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak and Punpun in spate as the death toll in current spell of floods rose to 205. Official sources said 17 more deaths were reported from Munger, Khagaria, Samastipur, Supaul, Saharsa and Darbhanga due to drowning or snake bites uring the past 38 hours taking the toll in the current wave of floods to 205. State water resource department sources said hundreds of villages were affected.

Amartya to visit Calcutta on Aug 13

CALCUTTA: Nobel laureate Amartya Sen will be on a week long visit to the city and his hometown Santiniketan from August 13. Sen will see his ailing mother in Santiniketan and attend a seminar on`Alternative Views on Economics' on August 19 here, State finance Minister Asim Dasgupta told reporters on Friday. During his visit, the Nobel laureate will also announce operating details of Pratichi, a trust which he had floated for socio-economic uplift of the backward classes, Dasgupta added.

Four killed by lightning in Bihar

JAMSHEDPUR: Four persons including a teenaged girl were killed and six injured when lightning struck them at different places in the city during the past 24 hours. Police said two persons including a girl died at Sundernagar and one at Mango on Friday during thunder shower in the city while the other at galudih, about 20 kms from here, on Thursday. All the victims died while working in open fields. Of the six injured, two were reported from Sundernagar and four from Galudih. They were admitted to hospital where the condition of two was serious, hospital sources said.
