CHANDIGARH, Aug 6: At least 600 cases against journalists and media organisations are pending with the Press Council of India. This was stated here today by the chairman of the Press Council of India, Justice P.B. Sawant (retd) while addressing a press conference.

The PCI chairman said that while 30 per cent of the cases related to harassment of mediapersons and against the authorities, including government and semi-government, the remaining 70 per cent were against journalists.

The Press Council of India, at its meeting here today, settled 60 complaints filed with it, of which 22 were against authorities regarding harassment of mediapersons and 38 were against the newspapers for breach of journalistic ethics.

The PCI censured Malai Sudhar, News Today (Chennai), Tom Tom and Hai Bangalore, while it administered warning to four newspapers - Amar Ujala (Meerut), Dainik Jagran (Lucknow), Vikrama Weekly and Dinabhoomi (Madurai) for publishing defamatory news items, he said. Besides, 197 complaints were summarily dismissed due to non- prosecution or being sub judice, he said.
