Dam overflows

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE  
AHMEDNAGAR, Aug 6: Bhandardara dam which is a main source of water to the northern parts of drought-prone Ahmednagar district has filled to its capacity on Thursday. Subsequently, the authorities have started discharging the water overflow from yesterday.

As compared to the last year, the dam has filled to its capacity 45 days in advance. Last year, the dam was filled on September 12.

The dam, constructed by the British in 1926, has changed the face of this drought-affected district. The people from northern areas of the district and fate of sugar and other industries are totally dependent on the waters of this dam which is one of the oldest dams in the country.

The filling of this dam is a happy occasion for the residents of Akole, Sangamner and Shrirampur talukas.
