Ants are like humans

Suprabha Sur
I am sure all of you have seen ants. There is no country in the world where you will not find any ants. It seems that ants are the most numerous living beings. Till now it has been found that there are more than 9000 species of ants. Amongst these, there are again several sub species. They are fewer in cold countries and more in hot countries.

In Europe and America much research has been done on ants. You will be surprised to know that a book of 1139 pages has been written on the ants of Zaire alone.

If you were to closely imagine your gardens, kitchen, store, etc, you would see large kingdoms and cities of ants. Ants live in self made cities just like human beings. They can recognise their friends by the sense of smell. Ants are very patriotic. They may even lay down their lives to,protect their homes, their kingdom and their queen. Ants are very diligent. They do not waste a moment. They always devote their time making houses, cities and collecting food. Ants also know how to preserve food for a considerable time.

There are some yellow variety of ants that like to build their kingdoms in ships and steamers and travel around the world. these ants love to stay in warm places.

You may not know that ants also have `cows'. Ants keep these `cows' in a separate compartment and look after them as we look after our `cows'. Their way of milking cows is also quite funny. When they feel like milking them they start tickling them. This way their cows get excited and start secreting a sweet-juice which the ants relish very much.

You may be surprised to know that there are giants amongst ants as well. These ants which are one to one and a half inches long can be found in Bolivia and Brazil and are just like `Gulliver' compared to normal ants. There is another kind of giant ant called `Bulldog' found in Australia. This species is very strong and cruel. Once, W.W. Mann, Professor of Zoology in Washington University saw a big battalion of giant ants attacking termites. He observed that these ants were entering the hills of the white ants (termites) and coming out carrying dead termites.

Like this amongst ants, there are many groups such as tailors, gardeners, smugglers, murderers and carpenters depending on the type of work they perform. It is really interesting and amazing to know all their facts.
