Omkar, Anuprita claim sub-junior titles

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, August 6: Sangli players, Omkar Patwardhan (7.5) and Anuprita Patil (5), won the boys and girls titles in the 29th Maharashtra State Sub-Junior Chess Championship, which concluded here today.

Nagpur's Gurpreet Singh Maras finished second among boys, while giant-killer Hitesh Jeswani (Nagpur) stood third. Yogesh Mapari of Aurangabad was placed fourth. The above four players would represent Maharashtra in the Nationals.

In the girls group, Richa Karwade (Pune) finished second, followed by the top seed Madhuri Patil and Priyanka Desai, who finished third and fourth respectively.

Today the games in the boys section finished in tame draws as they chose to play it safe. However, it was a different story in the girls category. Three joint leaders -- Anuprita, Madhuri and Richa Karwade -- fought it very hard to be in contention for the title. Anuprita prevailed over Priyanka Desai to notch the top spot.
