Mahanama retires

Nirupama Subramanian
Colombo, Aug 6: Sri Lankan batsman Roshan Mahanama, famous for the highest second-wicket stand in Test cricket along with Sanath Jayasuriya against India in 1997, announced his retirement from international cricket today. The announcement came a day after the 33-year-old batsman was dropped from both the Test and one-day squads for the upcoming home series against Australia and India.

Describing it as a decision ``painfully arrived at after careful thought,'' Mahanama said it had been ``difficult (to) sever my connections with a game that has been nothing less than a passion for me from my childhood.''
