Artefacts dating to prehistoric period unearthed
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
HUBLI, AUG 8: Several artefacts dating back to the prehistoric period have been unearthed at Herakal village in Bagalkot district of Karnataka.H R Desai of the Archaeological Survey of India and Ashok K Kandagal of Karnatak University at Dharwad, who have taken up the excavation, said this earthenware belonged to 300 BC-200 AD. These red, medium-size potteries with thick handle and rough surface were similar to the decorated earthenware found in Baluchistan and Afghanistan, of the Bronze Age (2500-1750 BC).Rough surfaced glasses resembling tea cups belonging to the Maurya and Shatavahana periods were also found. The most interesting of all was a rare piece of pot, with varaha (wild boar) sculpted on one of its sides. Furnished with a handle, the ware had been embossed with geometrical designs. The archaeologists also found a large number of iron weapons. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
