Ordinance on non-payment of land revenue

MUMBAI, AUGUST 8: The state government has issued an ordinance called the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 1999 to curb non-payment of land revenue by occupiers and government lesees. The ordinance that came into force from August 6 provides that the defaulters will be liable to pay an additional revenue charged by the State Bank of India and land revenue together with the interest to be recovered.Without the permission of the Collector, no land-holder of agriculture land can use the land for non-agricultural purposes. The land holder will have to seek the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's permission prior to undertaking any such development. The government has also decided to confer the powers of Collector on the municipal commissioner. The power of recovery of non-agricultural assessment has been vested with the Chief Executive Officer of Special Planning Authority, constituted under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.
