RAJKOT, Aug 8: The district administration will not host the historical Janmashtami fair this year as the election dates coincide with it. The authorities had earlier pinned their hopes on a postponement of polls, but the new programme announced by the Election Commission deferring the election only by a day from September 4 to 5 put paid to these hopes.The yearly fair is very popular in the city and surrounding areas. Every year lakhs of people visit the fair from the city and even far off places like Jamnagar and Junagadh.
In the five days of the fair, local businessmen do business worth crores. In fact, Rs 25 lakh worth of ice cream alone is eaten during the fair. The others who do good business are toy sellers, food stalls and those in the entertainment business.
The city chamber of commerce had also send a letter to the Election Commission saying that if the dates are not changed then it would affect the business of the city.
