Russia may lose Dagestan, says sacked premier

Agencies
MOSCOW, AUG 9: Sacked Russian premier Sergei Stepashin on Monday said that Russia risked losing the southern province of Dagestan where Islamic rebels have seized several villages. ``Today the situation in Dagestan is very difficult. I think we could really lose Dagestan,'' the government press service quoted Stepashin as saying at a final meeting with his cabinet.Meanwhile, refugees were quoted as saying on Monday that Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev and a Jordanian known as Khottab are leading the Islamic insurgents who have seized villages in Dagestan. The RIA-Novosti news agency said the several hundred insurgents who entered Dagestan from neighbouring Chechnya included Arabs and Africans as well as Dagestanis among their ranks.
