Two more die of leptospirosis

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Aug 9: Two more leptospirosis patients died in the New Civil Hospital and the Navsari Civil Hospital in the past 24 hours, even as seven patients were admitted to three hospitals in South Gujarat. With these casualties, the toll in the current bout of leptospirosis climbed to 10.

Regional deputy director, health, Dr Khasgiwala said on Monday that 45 patients were being treated at the New Civil Hospital, Surat, while another 23 were being treated at the Navsari Civil hospital and 12 at the Valsad Civil hospital.

Of the deaths that have occurred so far, six were in Surat, three in Navsari and one in Valsad, the office of the RDD added.

Meanwhile, as a leptospirosis awareness measure, a `Jivan Yatra' of health officials and volunteers will tour Mahuva and Vyara talukas -- the two worst affected in Surat district -- on Tuesday. Eighteen teams, including doctors, nurses, student nurses and anganwadi health workers, will cover as many villages of the two talukas as possible, a health department release added.
