BHAVNAGAR, Aug 8: Congress Steering Committee members staged an agitation against the decision to `de-reserve' the University and Gaurishanker Lake land during Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel's visit to the city on Saturday. Keshubhai was chief guest at a sammelan organised by `Desh Raksha Muslim Samaj' as a tribute to the Kargil martyrs.Baba Saheb Maulana Sayed Mohamad Kashim Ashraf presided over the function. The Council handed over two cheques of Rs 51,000 each to the Chief Minister for the Kargil fund.
Meanwhile, non-teaching employees organisation of Bhavnagar University handed over a memorandum to the Chief Minister in protest against the notification de-reserving the land reserved for the University.
Keshubhai said the land was declared de-reserved by a notification recently. According to the Vadava Survey number 471/2 it was actually a water body of the lake shown by Bhavnagar Area Development Authority (BADA) in its draft plan. Since the then Municipal Commissioner stated that the land did not belong to the municipal corporation, the Urban Development Department decided to de-reserve the land and a notification to the effect was issued. But now that survey notification has been cancelled and it was decided at a cabinet meeting on Friday to allocate 42 acres to Bhavnagar University. A decision on the remaining land will be taken when Rajendrasinh Rana and Sunil Oza visit Gandhinagar on Tuesday, the CM said.
Meanwhile, representatives of Gujarat State Machine Tools (GSMT), who have not received their salary since the last 21 months, handed over a memorandum to the Chief Minister.
The Khedut Mahamandal, whose lands have been reserved for 40 years for educational purposes urged the Chief Minister to resolve their grievances, president Haribhai Dodia and others said. Patel said he could not take a decision on the issue as he was bound by the Model Code of Conduct.
BU resolution: Bhavnagar University Executive Council met on Friday and passed several resolutions like revision in remuneration for examination staff, examination allowances for University employees, while a proposal for Diploma in Computer Applications (DCA) in Gandhi Mahila College (SNDT) has been referred back to the Academic Council.
