SANGLI, Aug 9: Suresh Patil of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has won the mayoral polls of the Sangli-Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation (SMKMC) with 49 votes after heavy cross-voting, while Jahida Inamdar of the same party won the deputy mayor's post with 56 votes.Patil's main opponent, Mohammad Kazi of the Congress, received only 15 votes, while Inamdar defeated Vimal Kharat of the Congress. Kharat secured only 11 votes.
Four votes of the NCP Vikas Front were secured by Congress candidate Mohammad Kazi.
In the 68 member house, the NCP Vikas Front had a majority with only 12 members.
The newly elected Mayor said that he would solve problems related to water, road and other necessities. The SMKC will insist on all-round development of the urban and nearby villages, he said.
However, some NCP corprorators from Miraj were reportedly not happy with the decision of party leaders to nominate Patil for the mayoral polls.
One coporator told Express Newsline that as the first mayor was from Sangli, this time it was the turn of Miraj city and the NCP should have given chance to a corporator from Miraj.
Jahida Inamdar, now Deputy Mayor, said that NCP Vikas Front had given her a chance to work for people. She said the minority communities were thankful to Madan Patil and the NCP Vikas Front.
Sharad Pawar's NCP led by former MP Madan Patil in Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation (SMKMC) had earlier joined hands with the opposition Vikas Front comprising Janata Dal and other parties.
Suresh Patil, after declaration of Assembly polls had demanded NCP nominee from Sangli constituency. Janata Dal MLA Sambhaji Pawar had also claimed that the seat now after patil's win in Mayoral polls, it is clear that Sambhaji Pawar will be nominated as NCP J.D. combined candidate. Other aspirants for mayoral polls including Kishor Kadam, Hanif Latif Kurne, Kiran Jagdale, Harun Shikalgar were told to withdraw from the mayoral polls by Madan Patil.
The former MP was expecting Suresh Patil and Jahida Inamdar to win by the margins of 68 and 55 votes respectively. Yet eventually Suresh Patil secured only 49 votes and Jahida Inamdar won 56 votes.
With this victory Madan Patil has proved his strength in Sangli district politics.
