PUNE, AUG 10: The Pune University yesterday rquisitioned two police vans anticipating trouble from the 300-odd third year engineering students who gathered at the main building for the fifth day in a row demanding implementation of the `carry over rule.'Students say the Pro Vice-Chancellor assured their representatives that the University would place their demands before the Engineering Faculty, which will take a decision within the next few days. The matter will then be discussed at the next meeting of the academic council.
The students said they would continue to skip theory classes and practicals till they were informed of a concrete decision by the University, permitting them to seek admission for the final year even if they failed to clear certain subjects in a particular year. At present, it is compulsory for students to clear the backlog within the next year itself.
The agitators also protested against several theory subjects from the fourth year beeing shifted to the third year. Studentscomplained that they had to clear backlogs of the June examination in October, to be eligible for admission to the fourth year. ``We will be denied the opportunity to study these subjects in both the third and final year,'' said one student.
University officials said they hoped the students would now end their agitation.
