Mumbai, Aug 10: Anna Hazare need not do his eleven-day penance after all, nor need he go to Sant Dyaneshwar for answers to ``lingering questions'' about the independence and rectitude of the judiciary! For, it now transpires that Judge K H Holambe-Patil's mother did not take any government house at concessional rate though the latter had offered her one. Hazare had yesterday alleged at Ralegaon-Siddi that within days of the Judge sentencing him to three years' imprisonment in the Babanrao Gholap defamation case, his (Holambe-Patil's) mother was alloted a government flat. Hazare said he was worried to learn that and said instead of demanding an inquiry he would go to Alandi and observe a 11-day fast and ``seek answers to lingering questions at the feet of Sant Dyaneshwar''. Hazare did, however, say that he was not sure if the judge's mother had taken possession of the house.
She did not. The facts of the case are that Judge Holambe-Patil's mother, Shewantabai, had applied for a house in the discretionaryquota long time ago. The government approved the application and sent a letter of offer a few days after the judgment.
Procedure demanded that Shewantabai write back to the government accepting the provisional allotment and submit necessary documents before the government made a final allotment. But as she did neither the offer lapsed.
``It is true that a letter was issued to Shewantabai Holambe-Patil. But, she never submitted the requisite papers required for final allotment. Under such circumstances, there is no question of allotment. It was unfortunate that Hazare chose to cast aspersions on a judge of the stature of Holambe-Patil, who is known for his honesty and integrity,'' a senior official of the housing department said.
Even otherwise, when Narayan Rane took over the reins of the state, he cancelled the entire list approved during the tenure of predecessor Manohar Joshi.
