Ahmedabad, Aug 10: The Narmada Abhiyan, an apex body of NGOs supporting the Sardar Sarovar Project, has sent a letter to President K R Narayanan imploring him not to get affected by the celebrities joining the anti-dam movement and has assured him that the project affected persons (PAP) are being well taken care of.The letter, copies of which have also been sent to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani, says the celebrities are showing disrespect to the judiciary by interfering which is sub judice. It also points out that people who are joining the movement have very little awareness about the immense benefits of the dam to Western India. ``Have they seen the agony of parched people pining for water? Have they witnessed the efforts of the Gujarat Government to provide drinking water to 15,000 of Gujarat's 18,000 villages through trains and tankers?'' the letter asks.
The letter further emphasises that the resettlement colonies in Gujarat, where the project-affected people are being resettled, are symbols of prosperity. Overnight people have risen to a privileged status from below the poverty line. While 74 per cent of Gujarat's farmers possess less than five acres, Sardar Sarovar PAPs, both landed as well as landless agricultural labourers, get five acres of land each, it is specified. The letter has been signed by president, Narmada Abhiyan, Krishnaprasad Patel.
