SP candidate files papers
Balu Nakum of the Samajwadi Party filed his nomination papers as a Lok Sabha candidate for the Surat seat on Thursday, the second day of filing papers.

Incidentally, since his papers were not correctly filled up, District Collector Sangeeta Singh had to ask him to go out, fill up the forms and then submit them. The job was done in an hour, after which she accepted the papers.

Nakum, perched on an open jeep and followed by a band playing music and about 25 vehicles of his supporters, passed through major streets of the city before reaching the collectorate. No candidates filed papers for Mandvi LS seat.

One more case
With the admission of one more leptospirosis patient to the Navsari Civil hospital on Thursday, the disease has affected 100 people of the region so far. Although no death was reported on Thursday, the disease has claimed 14 lives ever since it surfaced in Surat, Navsari and Valsad districts less than a month ago. New Civil Hospital sources in Surat said the condition of one patient was critical while others were recovering.

Volleyball win
The Trimbakeshwar team of Damka village has won a volleyball tournament organised at Bhatlai village by Reliance Industries for people residing around Hazira. Twenty-four teams from Damka, Vansva, Bhatlai, Mora, Suwali, Junagaam, Rajgari and Hazira took part in the recent tournament, a Reliance release issued here said. Magan Patel, sarpanch of Bhatlai village handed over the Reliance Champion Trophy to the winning team. Reliance vice-president N K Gaur said the company would continue to sponsor such events to tap local talent.

Book lovers' meet
The 40th Book Lovers' meet will be held at the GNFC corporate office auditorium on Thursday, August 19, at 6 p.m. in which Dr Ashok Kapadia will give a presentation on Vinod Bhatt's analysis of humour, the ``Vinod Vimarsh''.

Flag-hoisting
Energy minister Kaushik Patel will unfurl the national flag on Independence Day at 9 am at the historic Chowk Bazaar fort. He will also give away certificates to 250 people who worked in the relief-and-resuce operations during last year's floods. More than 550 freedom-fighters, too, will be felicitated, while saplings will be planted at Chhaprabhata.

Non-grant class
Vadodara:
A non-granted class has been added on at the Jeevan Sadhana English medium school for the students seeking general stream seats.
