AHMEDABAD, Aug 12: In a rare gesture of gratitude and affection, school girls and other women in the city will send more than 20,000 `Rakhis' to soldiers of Army units that fought in Kargil or are still camping there to deter Pak infiltration.``These threads of affection we will send to battle-hardened soldiers who have risked their lives for the country will make them feel good,'' says Capt (Dr) Virendra Mody, a retired Grenadier who fought along with Param Vir Chakra awardee Abdul Hameed in the Kehmkaran sector during the 1965 war. The man behind the idea, Dr Mody says he has already spoken to four schools and is planning to approach others during the coming week. Among the four schools sending rakhis across the miles are H V Kapadia New High School, which will send 900 rakhis, Mohiniba Girls School contributing 500 rakhis, Mount Carmel contributing 1,500 rakhis and the Brahmakumaris which will send 10,000 rakhis.
Students of New High School are sending 700 Independence day cards made from entries of a recently held Kargil war painting competition.
