Accused slips away from police custody

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PANCHKULA, Aug 12: Shopkeepers of Sector 9 today caught a `thief' who later fled away from the police custody.

The owner of Ambika Departmental Store, Pankaj Goyal said that a man called Sohan Lall came over to his shop and ordered household goods worth Rs 964 but did not make the payment. He requested him to deliver the goods at a house in Sector 9. When the shop employee reached the residence, Sohan Lall was waiting outside. He tried to flee away with the household goods. With the help of another shop worker Sohan Lall was nabbed.

He was brought to the Sector 9 market and was beaten up by the shopkeepers. Since such incidents have been taking place for the last few months in other sectors as well, the other shopkeepers who had encountered this incident were called. These included Durga Confectioners in Sector 7, City Departmental Store in Sector 8, Haryana Departmental Store in Sector 16 and Haryana Departmental Store and Panchkula Departmental Store, both in Sector 15.

They all identified the `thief' and took him to the police post in Sector 10. The president of the Shiva Market Association of Sector 9, S. K. Bansal said that they were told to write an application in Hindi. The shopkeepers left Sohan Lall at the police post. When they returned with the application the `thief' was not there and the police said that he had fled away from their custody.

The Superintendent of Police, Alok Mittal, when contacted admitted that there had been negligence on part of the police. He added that the police had raided the residence of the accused. Three members of the family of the accused have been detained for questioning and the police expects to arrest the accused within 24 hours. The Beopar Mandal has threatened that if the accused is not arrested within a day or the Sector 10 police incharge is not suspended, they will observe a total "bandh" in the township.
