Dingko, Jitender absence leaves squad depleted

NEW DELHI: Injuries to star boxers Ng Dingko Singh and Jitender Kumar have not only left the Indian squad for the coming World Championship a depleted one, but also left a question mark over preparations for next year's Sydney Olympics.

The 21-year-old Dingko is nursing a wrist injury that has prevented him from competing since his victory in the Imphal National Games in February.Jitender Kumar, who claimed the Commonwealth Games silver medal at Kuala Lumpur in September last year, is the other boxer considered a major prospect at Sydney, but he has also not returned to the ring since suffering a similar right hand fracture.

National sub-juniors

CHENNAI: The National Sub-junior Hard Court tennis championship will be held here from August 30 to September 4.

The events to be conducted will be for boys and girls singles (under-16) and (under-14) categories. Doubles events would also be held.

Bagan score

CALCUTTA: Mohun Bagandefeated Eastern Railway 4-2 in their Super Division league match on Thursday. Bagan scored in the third minute through Kasif Jamal while their Nigerian striker Chima Okerie made the scoreline 2-0 in the 24th minute.

Eastern Railway reduced the deficit in the 52nd minute as Binoy Saha found the target. Medio James Singh struck the third goal for Bagan 16 minutes later.

But the railwaymen again scored in the 80th minute as Saha netted for the second time.

Rohitaaz first back

BANGALORE: Rohitaaz Kumar of Team MRF, on a Escorts Yamaha, successfully tackled the gruelling conditions, made difficult by the heavy downpour and was the first to finish in the 25th Karnataka-1000 Rally for two-wheelers on Thursday.

One of the favourites, Zubin K Patel, who was reportedly injured in the reconnaissance run having fractured his arms, was the notable drop out. Three other riders from the original starting list of 54 did not take part.The K-1000 Rally, in its golden jubilee year, is being run by theKarnataka Motor Sports Club, with support from a beer company.
