Hindustan make a blistering beginning in super league

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, August 12: Hindustan defeated Moonlight 3-1 to begin their super league campaign in right earnest in the DSA-SAIL football championship under lights at the Ambedkar Stadium here today.

Starting on a blistering note Hindustan, true to their form, kept their rivals on tenterhooks until a resurgent Moonlight played some good game to pull one back in the second session. What probably clinched the issue in favour of Hindustan was their midfield, which worked well with Dharmender Kharola, Vivek Sharma and Mohammad Khalid doing a fine job. In between, the left flank also did its bit though the right one failed on occasions though there were plenty of chances.

Moonlight, who had the initial stranglehold, let Hindustan off the hook when Ranjan failed to utilise the chances that came his way. Twice he was guilty of missing from close, particularly on the second occasion when his feeble shot failed him.

Meanwhile, Hindustan increased their tempo and a fine combine of Mehtab Ahmed-Kharola and Rao saw the last named slotting in. That was in the 17th minute of the game. By the 38th minute they had consolidated their position with midfielder Vivek Sharma netting in. He received a fine cross from left-out Mahesh Bisht.

After change of ends, Moonlight let loose their firepower but last-minute tumbles failed them. The aggressive Moonlight pressed home the advantage and off a free-kick, stopper back Mohammad Furqan unleashed a powerful shot which stunned a jumping Biswajit Haldar under the Hindustan bar. Undeterred, Hindustan went on the pursuit of a goal and added one 10 minutes before the final whistle thorugh Rao after Mobin from right put him in possession.

On the inaugural day of the super league yesterday, Indian Air Force (New Delhi), beat City Club 2-0 to earn full points.
