Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee yesterday deftly overcame the handicap of his caretaker status and used his Independence Day speech to present his credentials to the nation as the man to lead India into the 21st century.

Reports from the BJP's Media Centre handling the campaign show a total eclipse of Advani. Vajpayee is the lone face to figure in 700 newspapers and periodicals and 20-odd television channels selected for the ad campaign for the next 45 days.
Fifth Congress list too mum on Sonia
The Congress held back party president Sonia Gandhi's name from its fifth list released yesterday but pushed the reluctant duo of CWC member Jitendra Prasada and actor Sunil Dutt in the fray.
