Admission seekers throng JAC

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Chandigarh, Aug 16: Heavy rush was witnessed at the Joint Admission Cell (JAC), Punjab University, at the Arts Block IV, for the second phase of counselling today that was conducted for admission to MA Part I courses in nine social science departments.

Students, who could not secure admission, during the first phase of counselling, made a beeline for the JAC this morning and stayed back till late in the evening to try their luck. In, what most admission-seekers described as a long-drawn and tedious process, the candidates were asked to mark their attendance at the JAC in the pre-lunch session.

Though the admission slips were to be distributed at 3 p.m. to those who had marked attendance earlier, the process couldn't begin till 4 p.m., causing considerable discomfort to the candidates and in some cases the parents, who crowded the corridor outside the Political Science department chairman's office. Inside, the coordinator was holding a meeting with the faculty from various departments.

The candidates, after collecting their admission slips, were required to get those signed by the JAC coordinator, deposit the fees and report back to the JAC to confirm admission. The next counselling would be held on August 20.

Meanwhile, several candidates complained that owing to the non-declaration of certain entrance tests conducted by the university, they were forced to seek admission in other courses to ensure that they do not miss out on getting admission. Students also complained that over 30 per cent of the BA Honours results declared by the university, were marked as "result late'' (RL) for various reasons, causing considerable loss to the Honours graduates.
