Gilitwala charged with murder

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Aug 16: The city Crime Branch has registered a case of murder against Harshad Gilitwala and Bhaskar Bhatt, among others. The charges were levelled after the death of Imdadhussain I Vadnagarwala, one of the three persons who was burnt in the fire at Bhagyodaya hotel on Drive-In Road on July 31.

The police on July 31 registered a case against Gilitwala and Bhatt on charges of attempt to murder, arson and rioting.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Subhash Trivedi said that after the death of Imdadhussain at a private hospital, the police had changed the charge to murder. He said the Crime Branch had unearthed some vital clues which suggested the involvement of others in the incident. Trivedi refused to divulge names of the suspects, but said that none of them belonged to any organisation.

Crime Branch sources said that Bhaskar, who is undergoing treatment at V S Hospital, was out of danger and likely to be discharged in 10 days. The condition of Gilitwala, who received nearly 75 per cent burns, is unknown.

Officials said that once any one of them was discharged, the Crime Branch would immediately begin the probe and take people in remand for further investigation.

Earlier, Third Additional Assistant Sessions Judge V M Chaudhary had quashed the order which stated that the investigation into the Bhagyodaya arson case be conducted by the city crime branch. The court also directed the Police Commissioner to hand over the probe to an officer above the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.

When contacted, Commissioner of Police P C Pandey said that he was yet to receive a copy of the order.
