BJP Govt sets aside another RJP deal

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
GANDHINAGAR, Aug 16: The BJP Government has set aside yet another "controversial" land deal cleared by the previous RJP regime. As per the deal, government land worth about Rs 3,50 crore had been allotted to a "dead man" in Viramgam town.

On July 24 last, the government rescinded the Vaghela regime's decision to allot 11,000 sq m of government land to one Govindbhai Desai who had died in 1993. The deal was set aside following recommendations by the five-member Cabinet sub-committee set up to review "controversial" decisions taken by the erstwhile Vaghela government. Industries Minister Suresh Mehta heads the panel.

Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya said entry of the "Inami" land originally belonged to Inamdar Mahipat Desai of Viramgam. But, the land had been acquired and transferred to government records since 1958, and no one from the Inamdar family had ever made any representation till 1988 to get back its possession.

But after that the Inamdar family started making representations to get the land regranted to the Inamdar's son, Govindbhai Desai. Following this, the collector issued orders in 1992, regranting the land in question to Govindbhai. A PIL was filed in the High Court in 1993 challenging the collector's orders.

Before the HC could dispose of the PIL, the Government revoked the collector's decision and decided to retain possession of the land. In the meantime, Govindbhai died in 1993. But, the Vaghela Govt decided, in July 1997, to regrant the land to the deceased Govindbhai.
