AHMEDABAD, Aug 16: Plans are afoot to expand the scope of work of the University Granth Nirman Board in a bid to increase its reach to the students in the remotest part of the State, Board chairman Keshubhai Desai said.Plans include improvement in the quality of books without increasing the prices, opening of sub-centres in various parts of the State to reach more students and buying of a van for mobility and holding more book fairs in the State. In the coming months, the Board will be publishing Naksha ma Gujarat (Gujarat through Maps) which will have all details collected till the 1991 census, said Desai.
The 35-member Board, along with such bodies in all the states of the country, was set up in 1970 on behest of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with an initial corpus fund of Rs 1 crore. The Board has the primary responsibility of encouraging regional language and help University students learn their subjects in vernacular.
Many programmes have been planned by the Board to increase its scope and to stand in competition against private publishers. The Board has even floated an idea to create CDs of Gujarati books, apart from holding book fairs.
