Somani upset VN Sule to enter final

MUMBAI, AUG 16: GD Somani School upstaged defending champions IES VN Sule to march into the Under-14 girls finals in the Mumbai City Inter-School Badminton Tournament, conducted by the District Sports Office (DSO), at Sachivalaya Gymkhana today. The spearhead of Somani's victory was Aanchal Vaswani, who beat Priyanka Tawde in the opening singles, and then paired with Apeksha Kulkarni to clinch the doubles.

The final, between Somani and St Anne's, will be held on Thursday. The Under-17 team events are scheduled for tomorrow, while the Under-19 and women's event are to be held on Wednesday.

Boys (U-14) semis: IES VN Sule bt Saraswati Vidyamandir 2-0 (Rohit PRabhu bt Mehul Pai 15-5 15-0, Rohit & Aditya Kini bt Mehul & Sanket Kanade 15-7 15-2); Bombay Scottish bt Balmohan Vidyamandir 2-0 (Siddharth Dhote bt Amit Telvekar 15-5 15-13, Amod Athavale & Salil Mahajan bt Amit & Saiprasad Naik 15-2 15-4).

Girls (U-14) semis: GD Somani bt IES VN Sule 2-0 (Aanchal Vaswani bt Priyanka Tawde11-6 11-2, Aanchal & Apeksha Kulkarni bt Priyanka & Pallavi Shetty 15-2 15-4); St Anne's bt Bombay Scottish 2-0 (Mansi Seth bt Ketki Rajsimha 11-5 10-12 11-2, Mansi Seth & Madhura PAranjpe bt Ketki & Mallika Kulkarni 15-6 15-6).

MCC, Mithibai in final

Mulund College of Commerce (MCC) and Mithibai College both won the crucial doubles to enter the girls team final of the Junior College Sports Association inter-college table tennis tournament at MCC, Mulund, today.

Girls singles (QF): Mamata Prabhu (MCC) bt Tushna Kanga (Ruparel) 21-4 21-5 21-7; Prajakti Godse (Vaze) bt Shivali Nayak (Mithibai) 21-17 21-17 21-19; Amruta Joshi (Ruparel) bt Avanti Tendulkar (Podar) 21-17 21-14 19-21 21-14; Shalmali Inamdar (Mithibai) bt Prachiti Joshi (MCC) 21-12 21-13 21-14.

Girls team (SF): MCC bt NM 2-1 (Renu Shirodkar lost to Aishwariya Jain 21-19 8-21 22-24, Mamata Prabhu bt Anshu Agarwal 21-7 21-3, Mamata & Renu bt Aishwariya & Anshu 21-15 21-15); Mithibai bt RA Podar 2-1 (ShalmaliInamdar bt Avanti Tendulkar 21-10 21-8, Shivali Nayak lost to Disha Varadarajan 17-21 20-22, Shalmali & Shivali bt Avanti & Disha 18-21 21-7 21-11).

Mario nets winner

Central Railway Parel Workshop defeated Bandra Packers 1-0 in the MDFA Harwood football league at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.

The all-important goal was scored by Mario Rodrigues off a pass by substitute Pascol Pereira.

Earlier in the evening, Wenden Institute B beat BMMPKB by a solitary goal scored by Narendra Karanjekar.

St Anthony's best

St Anthony's defeated Millat 11-0 in the final of the Mahani Mohalla Ekta Committee, Malvani Police Station and Silver Sports Club-organised Inter-School football tournament at Malad.

John Paul (St Anthony's) was adjudged player of the tournament and Shadab Ahmed (St Jude's) was named the upcoming player.
