Geena takes bow on a new stage

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
NEW YORK, AUG 16: Oscar-winning actress Geena Davis will try out for the US Olympic archery team this week at trials near here. Two years after her first lesson, Davis, 43, has a good chance to qualify for the team that will compete at the 2000 Olympic Games, to be held in Sydney, a paper said.

This Friday she will be in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where the top 32 female archers in the country will try out for eight spots.

Those eight women will then travel to Chula Vista, California on September 4-5, hoping to become the three team members and alternate who will travel to Sydney.

Even if the screen siren never makes it to the Olympics, she has already become one of the top female archers in the nation, according to fellow archers.

Last month she was placed 29th out of 300 women at the National Championships in Oxford, Ohio, to qualify for this week's tournament, the Daily News said.

``She has as good a chance of making the next cut as any of the 32 archers competing,'' said MJ Rogers, who workswith Olympic archers.

Davis first picked up the bow in 1996, when she underwent FBI pistol training for the action film The Long Kiss Goodnight.

The actress, who won an Oscar in 1988 for her role in The Accidental Tourist, was told she had natural talent as a shooter after playing a gun-toting housewife in Thelma and Louise.
