Two professors suspended

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CALCUTTA, AUG 17: Faced with public outcry and student agitation, the West Bengal Government has suspended two teachers of the state-run Presidency College and Barasat Government College on separate charges of molesting girl students.

Sources said that the action was taken on the basis of the report submitted yesterday by a two-member inquiry committee which, prima facie, accused the two teachers of molestation inside the college premises last month.

The committee, set up by the State Government, comprised Director of Public Instruction P Ganguly and Principal of State-run Bethune College Pushpa Mishra.

Sources said a detailed inquiry would be conducted by the State Vigilance Commission, adding that the committee's recommendations to the State Government had been passed on to the concerned college authorities for immediate action.

Students of Presidency College called off their six-day hunger-strike yesterday after the submission of the inquiry panel's report to the authorities. Incidentally, both theaccused belong to the Zoology Department of their respective colleges.
