Politicians fumble their way through citizens' queries

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, AUG 17: They trotted out the trite, ducked uppercuts and even threatened to resign. True to type, sitting MLA, Ashok Dhatrak (NCP), Prakash Bhuvad (Shiv Sena) and Vinod Shekhar (Congress) faced an impatient panel of citizens from the Colaba Assembly constituency with replies that were at once clever, inconsistent and amusing, at the first `Meet Your Candidates' programme organised by Action for Good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI) at Jaihind College on Monday.

What have you done for your constituency so far?

NCP: I made arrangements for a Rs 11 lakh slum water supply scheme. A road has also been constructed at Navy Nagar, where people had to earlier walk through mud. I was also the first person in Maharashtra to declare his assets and source of income.

Sena: As shakha pramukh, I started an ambulance service in '87 and have also carried out repairs on buildings, being a member of the Repairs Board.

Cong: The NCP is taking credit for all the work done by the Congress. We havealso made water and toilet arrangements at Ambedkar Nagar and Panchsheel Nagar.

What are the first three things you will do for your constituency if elected?

Cong: Concretisation of roads. The next is augmenting water supply, including main lines towards the Colaba Post Office.

NCP: I shall make people aware of their rights and duties. That in itself solves all problems.

Sena: Rebuilding dilapidated buildings so that people are not forced to go to transit camps.

What is you party's stand on the Rent Control Act?

NCP: We have always protected tenants' rights and are opposed to the Rent Control Act. If the Supreme Court gives a verdict against tenants, we shall make a new law supporting them.

Sena: We will support tenants.

Cong: No one has done as much for tenants as Murli Deora has. He initiated the entire drive, while the Sena-BJP government has done nothing. I shall even go on record to say that Minister of State for Housing Raj Purohit favours landlords. As far as the SC isconcerned, we are ready to go for a new bill if the verdict goes against tenants.

What are your plans for a multi-storey parking lot in the area?

NCP: Apart from the plan for the underground parking lot behind the Mafatlal Centre at Nariman Point, we shall also build parking areas under crowded offices. Stringent rules will be framed for granting licences to rented cars.

Cong: We will ask people from the suburbs to share vehicles, and also promote the habit of walking. Multi-storey parking areas will be encouraged.

Reclamation is still underway and no party has opposed it.

Cong: We have registered several cases against slumlords.

NCP: Public awareness is necessary to oppose such things.

Sena: We are opposed to such reclamation.

How will you spend the Rs 65 lakh MLA's fund?

NCP: I shall ask people to come forward with suggestions and will resign if anyone can prove any misappropriation of funds.

Sena: Most of it will be spent on repair of old buildings.

Cong: We willpublish advertisements and press releases asking people and NGOs for suggestions. Since slum-dwellers are more vigilant and demanding, more money is spent on them.

Audience: When will we get our footpaths back?

NCP: A balance is needed between self-employment and the need for foothpaths which will be solved once hawking and non-hawking zones are implemented.

Sena: I agree with him.

Cong: These people are not in touch with ground realities. Most of the unauthorised hawkers in the city have managed to get a court stay.

AGNI will hold 24 more meetings till September 8 to help voters know their candidates.
