Security and Dignity for senior citizens

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, August 17: Security with Dignity' was launched by the Dignity Foundation and Mumbai Police on Tuesday. Inaugurated by Justice B N Srikrishna and attended by Joint Commissioner of Police D Sivanandan, the service has been initiated to combat the security problems ofsenior citizens who live alone.

The police have identified 17 target localities for recurring crimes against senior citizens. The foundation itself has organised a group of 170 volunteers - 10 `Dignity Wardens' per police station area. The number will eventually increase to 730, corresponding to areas around 74 police stations.

A database of senior citizens who live alone will be prepared and all of them have been invited to register themselves through a specially installed Security Helpline number. Their names, addresses and domestic details will be recorded on this helpline. The volunteers will be trained in the security needs and precautions and be provided with a checklist to ensure that all precautions are followed regularly. Amonthly report will be presented to the police and the foundation will meet with the concerned officials.

Says Dignity Foundation President Sheilu Sreenivasan, ``A spate of violence against elders is rocking the city. We have networked with the police in correcting the errant behaviour of children who illtreat their parents. Through this we hope to reduce the number of crimes against senior citizens.''
