CHANDIGARH, AUG 17: Since the total literacy and the post-literacy campaigns have been completed in the city, it is time for the continuing education project for the neo-literates to go full steam.The decision was taken at a meeting of the Chandigarh Literacy Council today. It was decided to set up 360 centres for the project with 40 nodal centres, concentrated mainly in the villages and labour colonies.
Chairing the meeting, the Adviser to the UT Administrator, Vineeta Rai pointed out that the literacy campaign should be made into a people's movement. Vineeta Rai stressed on the need for involvement of NGOs, social organisations and panchayats in making the campaign a complete success. The Deputy Commissioner and chairman of the Council, M. Ramsekhar, briefed the council about the agenda for the continuing the education programme.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the centres to be set up in schools, anganwaris, panchayat buildings and community centres would be equipped with books, sports information material, education charts and maps.
Moreover, this scheme would provide income generating programmes too, Deputy Commissioner M. Ramsekhar noted.
