Uddhav kicks off Sena poll campaign

EXPRESS NEwS SERVICE
NAVI MUMBAI, AUG 17: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's son, Uddhav, kicked off the party's election campaign in the Thane-Belapur constituency at a well-attended meeting of party workers at Koparkhairne, Navi Mumbai, today.

Launching an attack on former Sena minister Ganesh Naik, he urged party workers to ``crush the personal fiefdom'' of Naik in Navi Mumbai and restore democracy by winning the Thane-Belapur seat for party candidates.

``Each worker should study the alliance government's booklet of achievements during their term, only then will they be able to convince voters,'' he said.

The meeting was addressed by party leaders Vilas Avchat, Jagannath Patil, Vitthal More, former mayors of Navi Mumbai, Sushma Dande and Chandu Rane, and district Sena chief Anand Dighe.

The Lok Sabha candidate for Thane-Belapur, Prakash Paranjpe, who is aiming for a hat-trick, underlined the importance of grassrots workers in winning an election. Paranjpe also pointed out that the percentage of people who voted in theconstituency was just 11 per cent of the total 8.9 lakh voting population, in the last two elections. The remaining 89 per cent should be urged to vote if the Sena has to with a huge margin, he said.

While Paranjpe stands a fair chance for the Lok Sabha election, the battle for the Assembly seat will be a three-way contest between Sitaram Bhoir (Sena), sitting MLA Ganesh Naik (NCP) and Janardhan Gauri (Cong).

The meeting, though, lacked enthusiasm. Even the speakers failed to mention any concrete issues and chose to rise the all-pervasive Kargil high among the alliance partners.
