Ivanisevic nightmare continues

INDIANAPOLIS, AUG 17: American qualifier Jared Palmer extended Goran Ivanisevic's losing streak to four consecutive matches when he won a 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-3 first round match at the $ 870,000 ATP Tour RCA Championships in Indianapolis yesterday.

The top eight seeds, led by world number one Pete Sampras and fourth-ranked Patrick Rafter of Australia, received first-round byes.

CAPRIATI WINS: American Jennifer Capriatibeat Spain's Angeles Montolio 6-1 6-3 in the first round of the Canadian Open yesterday. The ninth-seeded Barbara Schett, the highest seed in action -- the top eight led by Martina Hingis had a bye -- defeated Alexandra Stevenson 6-2 7-5.

The WTA Tour event was hit by setbacks, when German Steffi Graf and Russian Anna Kournikova pulled out, the latter due to a stress fracture in her right foot.

GIMELSTOB WINS: American Justin Gimelstob was a spoiler for the second straight week, upsetting 15th-seeded Richard Fromberg of Australia 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-4) in the Legg Mason classic at Washington.
