New Delhi, Aug 19: The Delhi High Court today dismissed a petition challenging giving of the national award to Hindi film Godmother with Rekha in the lead role.A division bench comprising Chief Justice S N Variava and Justice S K Mahajan said these were not the matters where the court should intervene.``We would not like to interfere in the matter as it is the discretion of the government (to give national award),'' the court observed.
The petition filed by private organisation -- Filmavlokan -- had challenged giving of six national awards to Godmother on the ground that it portrayed the lifestyle of mafia, violence, riots and murders, which amounted to violation of the guidelines laid down by the Censor board.
``Will films like Godmother promote production of healthy movies?'' Will granting of the best film national award to a film which depicts the biography of a mafia don, not encourage the youth to follow in the foot steps?'' the petitioner asked.
The petition claimed that screening of the filmportraying the mafia don Santokhben Jadeja has been stayed by the Gujarat High Court.
It said Godmother has been given best Hindi film, best actress, best lyric writer, best music direction, best editing and best playback singer national awards for 1998 which were announced this year.
Earlier, the film sparked a controversy in Gujarat with the political parties protesting against the depiction of a mafia don.
